Teaching and Tutoring
Math and Physics Center Tutors
The Math and Physics Center, located in the Segerstrom Science Center (SEGC 170), provides free drop-in tutoring to APU students who need assistance with any level of mathematics or physics. The center is staffed by student tutors (mostly APU mathematics and physics majors) from 2-8 p.m., Monday through Thursday. If you are interested in becoming a tutor, contact the department to request an application.
Academic Success Center Tutors
The Academic Success Center (ASC), located in Building 30 on East Campus, provides free one-on-one and group tutoring in many subjects, including mathematics and physics. If you are interested in becoming an ASC tutor, contact Academic Success Center Tutors.
Supplemental Instruction Leaders
The Academic Success Center also coordinates Supplemental Instruction (SI) for many introductory-level courses, including MATH 130 Introduction to Statistics. SI sessions help students to master course content while developing and integrating effective learning and study strategies. SI leaders undergo intensive training and then lead multiple group study sessions each week at times convenient for members of the class. If you are interested in becoming an SI leader, contact Supplemental Instruction Leader .
Course Teaching Assistants
For certain challenging courses (including MATH 280 Discrete Mathematics and Proof and MATH 450 Real Analysis), students are hired to serve as teaching assistants. A teaching assistant prepares and leads a one-hour problem session each week to help reinforce the material students are learning in class. Teaching assistants are chosen from among students who have excelled in particular courses during prior semesters.
Student Graders
While faculty grade all exams and papers, students are often hired to grade homework assignments. These students often report that the process of evaluating the work of others helps them to understand the material more deeply. Student graders are chosen from among students who have excelled in particular courses during prior semesters.
Volunteering at Local Schools
There are multiple ways for students to use their math and physics skills to serve students in the Azusa Unified School District. Contact the Department of Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics to learn more.
