Why This Major Is Relevant

Our society is driven by the written word. Business, entertainment, politics, and religion all revolve around the effective use of language. There is an ever-present need for professionals who can craft different types of communication to achieve a goal, whether it is to entertain, inform, persuade, or sell. An APU English major is uniquely equipped to meet this need and can anticipate a wide variety of employment opportunities as a result.

Gain In-depth Learning Experiences

The program offers a balanced selection of courses in creative and professional writing, literature, and film studies for students majoring in English. Minority authors are embedded in courses throughout the literature core. In addition, specialized courses are offered in African American Literature, American Ethnic Literature, Women and Literature, and so on. Advanced seminars often focus on specialized topics such as Alfred Hitchcock, Andre Dubus, California Fiction, Catholic Writers, Contemporary British Fiction, C.S. Lewis and the Inklings, Faulkner and Hemingway, Harlem Renaissance, J.R.R. Tolkien, Postcolonial Literature, Postmodern Literature, Spiritual Autobiography, Toni Morrison, etc.
